Jim McDonald, Sri Lanka Country Specialist for AIUSA
Jim McDonald is the Sri Lanka Country Specialist for AIUSA. He has held this volunteer position since 1990. He has testified before Congress on Sri Lanka for AIUSA and has coordinated several AIUSA campaigns on Sri Lanka. He is also a member of Group 113 in Chicago.
Sri Lanka faced an unprecedented economic crisis in 2022, which led to widespread protests and a change in government in July. The new government has cracked down on dissent while implementing austerity measures to address the economic crisis. Jim McDonald will provide a brief background to the economic crisis and protests. He will also describe AIUSA's current campaign to protect the right to protest in Sri Lanka, including specific actions that members can take.
